Victorian Cranberry Red Jeweled Pull Down Oil Lamp withCrystals Painted Font 1880s

Absolutely Stunning Antique Victorian Jeweled Hanging Oil Lamp with Ruby Red Cranberry Bullseye or Thumbprint Shade and Milk White Painted Rose Font & Lots of Crystal Dangling Prisms, Chain Drop Mechanism is Patented September, 1887. Classic Ornate Hanging Parlor, Entry, Library or Other Lamp, Approx: 13 lbs.

Does not get much prettier than this Victorian hanging lamp! Not sure of the maker or exact age, as we acquired from a very selective collector's estate. Its looks like many identified as Pittsburgh Glass Company, but if it is marked, we did not see it. It has a Patent Date of Sept 1887 on the pull down mechanism.

The pull down mechanism seems to work pretty well and we moved it up and down a few times about 20 inches, but did not want to over stretch it, but the retrieval spring seems very strong. There is some patina to metal fashionings on lamp as is common and some aged wear and a few small splits to metal as well, but overall is very solid and maintains a great look. The jewels are firmly in place.

The glass even has some old glass swirls, common in the hand made shades from the era. The white font is lovely, but the actual brass fuel cap will not come off and it appears the glass spout broke off and was reattached (glued) at some point. That is not a problem as the burner itself can easily be removed to add fuel as needed, but we wanted to note it.

The fancy glass Chimney is included as well, but was not seen in all pictures as we added artificial lighting for effect. We assembled the lamp as best we could for pictures, you may wish to add additional chains between metal drops or rearrange crystals as you desire. There was no wick or fuel in font when we obtained the lamp and we did not add fuel or a wick.

The lighting you see in pictures is from a light bulb attachment we only used for effect (it is not part of the lamp, we just plugged it in from behind and set on top of the font). Obviously, lighting will vary depending on the source you choose to use. Many people electrify these lamps which is easy to do of course. As far as we know this lamp is complete, but we are not experts on these, but it looks terrific as it is.

The only thing you may want to add is two chain stop balls where the top of the drop chains connect to the actual drop pieces. This helps keep the chains from retracting into the top mechanism when not in use. Not a big deal and the lamp works with out them, but we thought we would note that (some ruby colored connector balls would be neat). On this lamp, we will remove all the crystals and wrap them individually, as we will with the shade, font and other parts. We will try our best to keep chain drops as firmly secured as we can so you can easily reassemble the lamp.

We found it easier to assemble if you have another person assist you as there are numerous delicate and moving parts. It takes a few minutes, but it sure is worth it when you are done!

If any of the wires (which are likely 120+ years old) connecting the crystals or those used to attach them to lamp happen to break, any thin firm wire can be used to repair.
