Oil Lamp, Early 1900's Vintage Pedestal lamp, Amethyst Purple, irradiated

This listing is for a beautiful Amethyst purple antique pressed glass pedestal oil lamp. 19.5 It is in working condition and can be used. It does have seams visible from manufacturing. It does have some minor scratches, minor sun staining, rubbing, and blemishes that you would expect from something this old.

The outside and rim do not show any chips or cracks. This lamp does not come with a chimney, but it is readily available at any good antique mall. Purple/Amethyst Glass and the Irradiation Process. The beautiful purple color of this glass is caused by the presence of manganese, which was used in early glass production as a de-colorizer to turn the glass clear. Manganese is one of the oldest glass additives, and purple manganese glass was used since early Egyptian history.

Around 1915 most glass companies stopped using manganese, substituting selenium as the clearing agent. Glass that contains manganese will turn amethyst/purple when exposed to ultraviolet rays of the sun or other sources of UV rays.
