Pink Satin Antique "Rose" Miniature Oil Lamp by Fostoria and Consolidated, Ca. Pink Satin "ROSE" Night Lamp, S1-385. About 6 3/4 tall to top of shade.
About 3 1/2 tall to top of collar. Pink Satin "Rose" Night Lamp. Manufactured by Fostoria Shade & Lamp, Ca. Nutmeg burner marked "MADE IN USA".
Classic Victorian Miniature Oil Lamp. Frank & Ruth Smith, in their book "Miniature Lamps" show a lamp like this in Figure 385 and state that it was made by Consolidated Glass circa 1894.
But Ann McDonald documents the fact that this lamp was advertised by the Fostoria Shade & Lamp Company in the October 9, 1890 issue of the Crockery & Glass Journal. It turns out that both statements are true by dint of the fact that one company merged with the other. Nicholas Kopp was the senior glassmaker at Fostoria in 1890 and this lamp appears to have been made under his direction. In 1893, Fostoria merged with the Consolidated Lamp & Glass Company and Kopp went to Consolidated as the plant manager.
Many of the Fostoria designs were adopted by Consolidated and continued to be made after the merger. According to the Smiths, the lamp is found in both satin and glossy cased glass in pink, blue, white, yellow and in a light peach color (Kopp was noted for his skill in producing wonderfully colored glass). Most of the examples of this lamp we've seen are in either pink, yellow or blue with both satin and glossy finishes.
It's rarely found in white or in the light peach color mentioned by the Smiths. It is occasionally found with a painted floral decor or encased in a silver filigree. This example of the "Rose Night Lamp" (as it was called by Kopp) is a lovely pale pink color with a smooth as silk satin finish. The glass is "cased"--that is, it was made of a thin inner layer of white glass coated with an outer layer of pink. It is a very pretty little lamp.
Note that while the font, or base, of this lamp has a graceful pinched-in square shape, the shade is circular and is embossed with an artichoke-like pattern. Kopp used this artichoke shade on several different lamp bases--all of them appropriately coordinated and attractive. The multiple uses to which this shade was put suggest a major efficiency for a large factory which at its height produced over 800 dozen lamps per day (over 2 1/4 million lamps per year)! Condition of this lamp: This lamp is in excellent condition with no discernible chips, cracks, damage or defect.
The brass hardware on this lamp is in similarly fine condition. The brass collar is firmly affixed to the font and has no splits or cracks.
A Nutmeg burner, marked "MADE IN USA" on the thumb wheel screws tightly into the collar. The thumb wheel turns freely.
There is no wick in this lamp. The shade ring fits snugly over the burner gallery and holds the artichoke pattern shade securely in place. The lamp comes with a 4 3/4 tall clear glass chimney with fire polished edges. The chimney is also in excellent condition. This "Rose" Night Lamp is a classic Victorian miniature lamp designed and manufactured under the direction of a gentleman considered to be one of the finest and most prolific American glass makers of his time. This very soft and feminine pink satin lamp could easily have graced the bedside or dressing table of a Victorian lady.
