Here is a beautiful 13 pewter whale oil lamp clock with pleasing proportions and surface. The Whale oil was poured into the blown glass container at the top and time was marked by the level of the burning oil. For each hour the whale oil burned, the oil lowered to the next marked level and another hour had passed. The pewter bands holding the glass oil container is marked with Roman Numerals on one side.
The sequence of Roman Numerals is: "V", "VI", "VII", "VIII", "IX", "X", "XI", "XII", "I", "II", "III", "IV", "VI", "VII". There is a single pewterer's touchmark (Angel) on the opposite side. The lamp has a metal wick holder / guide at the mouth. It has a classic arched handle with thumb rest. The baluster holder rises from a saucer base.
The lamp is in good condition with no distracting dents or scratches, except on the base bottom. The whole lamp is 13" tall, 7.5" to the top of the stand without the glass receptacle and 5 across the base. This is an unusual and attractive c.1800s whale oil lamp in good condition with unknown touchmark.
