Antique Pewter Bullseye Patent Whale Oil Lens Lamp by Roswell Gleason
This single lens pewter "bullseye" whale oil lamp with brass, two-wick burner is one of the most iconic forms of antique American lighting. Although unsigned, this is positively identifiable as a product of Gleason's shop in Dorchester, Mass. And is marked with lightly-rubbed impression of his "PATENT" stamp atop the lens visor. The particular size and shape of the base and shaft are all from the same moulds used for other Gleason lamps. All original, no replaced parts. This example has not been cleaned in modern times, and thus retains the rich, grey patina froom oxidation over many decades. The lens tab was reinforced (probably in the 19thc century)--a commonplace repair found on some 90% of these Gleason lamps--and further evidence of its authenticity. The base is weighted with sand [offsetting the top-heaviness of the lens], which is held in place by a tinplate disk.
That disk has rusted a bit, leaving the orange coloration on one side as may be seen in the photo. Please see my other offerings of early lighting and antique pewter, too! The item "Antique Pewter Bullseye Patent Whale Oil Lens Lamp by Roswell Gleason" is in sale since Thursday, December 20, 2018.
