Up for sale is a stunning 19th century bronze hand hammered Japanese dragon footed oil lamp with a stunning white coin dot ball shade. I believe this lamp was brought to the US by A. Vantine company of Manhattan as I have seen others with a burner marked with his company name on it.
This particular burner has many patent dates May 19, 1875, Feb 27, 1877, Sep 10, 1889 and Jan 21 1890 so maybe a burner used prior to his branding his own burners for use on the imported lamps from Japan. Anyway the burner is in good working condition and does not appear to have had much use.
It does have one dent on the rounded edge as pictured on the oil font. It has a 10 plus ball shade that is just stunning on this lamp.
I did take it apart to attempt to find any other marks on the lamp prior to finding some similar examples attributed to Vantine's company. From the Thesis: The A. Vantine & Company was a well-established Asian art store based in New York.
The firm flourished for sixty-five years, adeptly reacting to rapid socioeconomic and cultural changes. After Vantine opened three Japanese offices in the early 1890s to become an influential gaish o (Western trading house).
