The upper bowl contained the (oil, grease, fat) with a floating wick; the lower bowl caught the drippings (to be reused). There is a serrated stud on the stem to make adjustments to the upper bowl as the grease burned. This lamp can be either hung by the hook, or have the end point stuck horizontally into a beam. Condition : Very Good overall with expected wear, soiling, oxidation, etc. See photos for complete details and close-ups. Please consider them as part of the description. Displays brilliantly; highly appropriate for any collection of Early Colonial Lighting. Measures approximately 5-1/2H, excluding the hook and connecting hardware. The graduated bowls measure 3-3/4L and 4L, respectively. Overall height with hook in the vertical position: 11-1/4H.
