The primitive gyroscopic system is rather beautiful. It's a whale-oil candle lamp made of iron, with a triple gimbal to steady the burning flame in the heaviest seas or winds.
A seafarers lamp from Nelson's day - 1800's when whale oil was the main source of lighting. Made from wrought iron ribs, held with simple rivets to top and bottom. Sphere cage held by metal rivets..These were held aloft the cage was designed to keep the naked flame from the oil light, well away from the flammable canvas sails and rigging! Twin wicks in a suspended reservoir, used for holding whale oil. Good condition - approx 22cm radius.
