RARE HUGE Antique Brass Astral Lamp Solar Lamp w/Cut Shade Marble. Originally these antique solar lamps would have had a very early centre draft burner and used whale oil, lard or vegetable oil for fuel. Some time after 1860 the draught tube was removed and it was converted to kerosene which was much easier to use and produced a far superior light. On this solar lamp the shade holder is like a cap that fits over the font so that the shade sits around the widest part of the font.

Once the shade is in place, the font and burner become virtually invisible. The beautiful hand blown and hand cut shade is very fine with no chips or cracks.
