Antique Satin Cased Glass 1890 Consolidated Fostoria Yel ROSE Miniature Oil Lamp. 22 photos above for your review... Stunning Antique Victorian Miniature Oil Lamp. Very Rare Satin Cased Yellow Glass "Rose" Night Lamp by Fostoria & Consolidated, ca 1890 - 1894.
Original Burner marked "PAT FEB'Y 27 1877". Background & History: Frank & Ruth Smith, in their book "Miniature Lamps" show this lamp in Figure 385, and they state that it was made by Consolidated Glass circa 1894. But Ann McDonald documents the fact that this very lamp was advertised by the Fostoria Shade & Lamp Company in the October 9, 1890 issue of the Crockery & Glass Journal. But in fact, both are true...Because the two companies merged. Nicholas Kopp was the senior glassmaker at Fostoria in 1890 and this lamp appears to have been made under his direction. In 1893, Fostoria merged with Consolidated Lamp & Glass Company, then Kapp went to Consolidated as the plant manager. Many of the Fostoria designs were adopted by Consolidated and continued to be made after the merger.
This lamp was made in both Satin & Glossy cased glass in Pink, blue white, yellow and light peach. (Kapp was noted for his skill in producing beautifully colored glass). This rare example will fluoresce under black light...The fluorescence is because of manganese used in the glass mixture as a coloring agent. During WWI, manganese was stopped from use by the government, because it was considered a strategic metal. Condition: This lamp was obtained from a collector estate, liquidated by his heirs. It is in 100% complete condition with no damage at all. All original, actually had oil in it and the wick is still present. I did not clean the well out... Decided to leave it as original. Only cleaning was to exterior to free up some dust that had accumulated in the undulations of the rose petals. The future owner may decide to clean it further or leave it as it is. There are no chips, it is as manufactured. The Burner is most likely a Nutmeg, shows the pat date of Feb'y 27, 1877. Has the original Shade Holder Ring, which sits nicely in place to hold the globe in place. This is a thick glass chimney as was made back in the day, not a thin modern replacement. The lamp is all original. The thumb wheel is steady in place, but the wick in the slot of the wheel adjustment is kind of dry and doesn't want to move (you may wish to soak it).
8" Tall Overall, 7 1/4" to top of globe, Globe is 4" Diameter & about 3" tall, Well is about 3 3/4" square, almost 5" corner to corner. To discuss this with me, see below!
