Antique Art Nouveau 11 Figural Spelter Stem Glass Oil Lamp Stand, France, c1890
Description : A 19thC Art Nouveau Oil Lamp Stand or Stem with gilded Spelter figure and foliate elements, France, c. Ornate cast iron base and upper font rest with leaves and floral blossoms handcrafted in copper or similar. Bronze or gold-gilded Spelter figure of a man with hat and short cape carrying a long boat oar. He appears to be calling out to someone in the distance. This was made to hold a glass Oil Lamp font, burner & chimney?
But displays quite well with any pillar-type or similar squatty candle. Condition : Appears to be the original, untouched surface(s) throughout with expected wear, moderate soiling, finish loss, oxidation, etc. It has not been cleaned. No damage or repairs noted. The Spelter figure has an age-appropriate verdigris patina in some areas (see photos).
Note : The flathead screw that secures the figure is not original. It holds the figure in place, but not quite long enough to prevent rotation, if one were to grab at it.
This will need either a small washer or longer screw to prevent movement entirely. See photos for complete details and close-ups. Please consider them as part of the description. Measures 11-1/4H overall on a 4-3/4 x 4-3/4 square base. The stem and florals extend off the back a maximum of 2-1/4. The upper cast iron font rest has a 4 diameter flat area that flares out to about 5 overall. The rest will fit a large Yankee Candle Jar, for reference.
